When it comes to your teeth, cold sensitivity is a common issue that many people face. It can be annoying and just downright uncomfortable, but don’t fret because you are not alone! Tooth sensitivity is especially common during the colder winter months because of the dropping temperatures. The cold weather makes us more aware of our sensitivities from breathing in the cold air! Oh boy, I can feel my teeth chattering now (just kidding). This sensitivity comes from the thinning enamel that is supposed to protect our teeth also becomes dedicated or when gum recession occurs, which will expose the underlying root surface.
Particular toothbrushes will cause this abrasion much more easily than others. For example, electric toothbrushes are less likely to cause this type of abrasion as opposed to regular plastic ones. The plastic toothbrushes can simply just be a little rough for the edges of our gums, and it causes damage to the enamel aka tooth sensitivity.
This is caused by a large consumption of acidic foods like fruits, citrus, wine, sodas, sparkling water, and other acidic juices. The acid breaks down the enamel over time, and without proper tooth care, it can lead to a lot of sensitivity.
The inflammation of your gums can loosen ligament support and end up exposing the root surface, leading to sensitivity.
Sensitivity from this is simply a result of wear and tear, breaking down the enamel and causing the teeth to be less resilient. Grinding and clenching your teeth is tough on those pearly whites, so that is part of the reason it is so important to talk to your dentist about options to preventing that uncomfortable habit.
